Match Report

Fortunately Stourbridge was not affected by the very heavy overnight rain that other parts of the area had suffered and the game was able to start on time. Conditions were very suitable for bowling but Conference won the toss and elected to bat first.

As expected the openers had difficulty in getting going as the bowling of G. Marshall and A. Finch was accurate and bowled good lengths, making the most of the early conditions. Not surprisingly scoring runs was difficult and wickets fell. However a watchful and steady stand between J.Hudson and Z. Smith gradually saw the Conference team start getting value for shots, and as conditions eased so this stand started to get the team back on track. The change of bowling to take the pace off didnt work very well as the change bowlers bowled too short allowing cameo knocks from A.Jones,T.Williams, L.Chistie and Tanveer whose respective innings, started to make the score look very respectable after the early set backs. By the end of the innings ,despite the early conditions and set backs, a competitive total was achieved.

The Academy openers also started very tentatively. Conference opening bowlers A.Ali and D.Ross-Watt made sure that they kept the pressure on by also bowling good line and lengths and taking early wickets. But as in the first innings the change bowling also suffered by bowling too short and W.Wade and C.Hinckley gradually started to take the initiative away from the fielding side. It was only a good slip catch by L. Chistie that broke the stand. However W.Wade started to increase the scoring pace and first with R.Hardwick and then E.Bragg built up stands that eventually saw the Academy team win with 3 overs to go. D.Ross- Watt was the pick of Conference bowlers.

Stourbridge CC are to be thanked again for providing and excellent pitch and hospitality. Their efforts to stage this fixture over the past few years is very much appreciated. It is hoped that gaining experience in these type of matches that we will see players from the Academy eventually progress to the professional game.
