Match Report

So near yet so far…..

On the picturesque Stratford cricket ground Conference faced a strong MCC side. Batting first Conference were soon in trouble losing two wickets for six runs  and a further two wickets by the time the score reached 47. Thereafter a revival began with veteran Ishtiaq Mohammed (Penkridge ) leading the way with a belligerent 59. After he was out Darrell Williams (Barnt Green) was joined by Andy Jones (Penkridge) and the pair added sixty four before Williams was out for 37. Jones  (54) continued with good support from Ben Hudson (Wombourne) with 27 before Conference were bowled out in the 49th over for a competitive 236. Will Mottram (K&D) was the leading bowler for the MCC with three for 38 in his 10 overs

In response MCC started brightly with Berrill (51) and Mike Powell (19) putting on forty six in 12 overs before  Nihal Shilar (Penkridge) broke the partnership  and started a mini collapse with a splendid spell of slow bowling taking 4 for 26 in his 10 overs. The MCC middle order began a fightback with Scott Stenning (K&D) with 41 and Chris Booth, 52 not out together with Anderson with 33 leading the way. But the Conference responded with further late wickets until five were needed in the last over with just two wickets  remaining. The cool head of Mottram with a boundary off the fourth ball secured victory for the MCC by two wickets with two balls remaining.

A quite superb game played in  an excellent spirit by both teams made for a great day’s cricket.

Add in the hospitality of the Stratford-upon-Avon Cricket Club and good weather it all made for a great finish to the Conference season. But it would have been nice to win. So near  yet so far !
