Match Report

This was a 50 overs match and would be the last played by Conference before its dissolution on 30th September.

MCC won the toss and invited Conference to bat on a breezy but dry day. A rapid start was made by Calcutt and W.Shah with the latter being dismissed with the score on 54. Calcutt (58) was dismissed shortly afterwards. Currill and Arun added 57 runs for the third wicket which fell with the score on 125 with over 25 overs remaining. With experienced batting still to come it looked as though a score in the high 200’s might be achievable. Unfortunately, that was not to be the case. Conference batsmen struggled following the introduction of spin and wickets fell at regular intervals. The final wicket fell in the 50th over with the score on 219. For the MCC, Lambert took 5 for 32.

The start of the MCC innings mirrored that of Conference with batsmen scoring freely all round the wicket. Their third wicket fell with the score on 97 with T.Smith at the wicket.  None of the Conference bowlers was able to bowl a consistent line and length and the MCC achieved their target with 5 wickets and 11overs in hand. Smith dominated the batting and finished with a score of 89 not out. For Conference, A.Shah and Urquhart each took 2 wickets.

This was an enjoyable game played in excellent spirit. Unfortunately, during the MCC innings the Conference wicket keeper, Calcutt  sustained cuts and bruising to his face and possible concussion. He was taken to hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Thanks go to Stratford-upon-Avon CC for the work undertaken by their ground, catering and bar staff throughout the day. Thanks also go to the umpires and scorers for their dedication throughout the afternoon.
