Match Report

Walsall entertained the Conference to celebrate their forthcoming 200 anniversary and 100 years at The Gorway. Put in to bat on a damp wicket the Conference reached 251 for 5 wickets thanks to a splendid innings of 120 by Alex Mellors of Leek which included 13 fours and 1 six. Choudhury with 32 and Waquar Ahmed (35) also batted well and Anderson with a whirlwind 23 not out in 11 minutes added to the fun whilst Powles with three for 34 was the pick of the Walsall bowlers.

A long delay for rain led to an extended tea interval and when play resumed the target for victory had become 203 off 27 overs. After the fall of an early wicket Jonkers with 47 including 8 fours and Maxfield with 60 , 6 fours and 3 sixes, set about the Conference bowling with relish. Skipper Powles continued the onslaught with his 73 including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Only Chris Beech with 2 for eighteen stemmed the flow. The Conference bowlers being handicapped with a wet ball did not detract from a great effort by the Walsall batsmen who secured victory with an over to spare.

An excellent match enjoyed by all which together with first class hospitality provided by the host Club made for a great day.
