Match Report

Olton & West Warwick Cricket Club celebrated their 125th anniversary with a 40 overs match against Conference. Putin to bat on a firm wicket, A.Mellor and C.Beech gave Conference a solid start before the first wicket fell with the score on 47. 5 further wickets fell cheaply and Conference looked in trouble at 77 for 6. However, M.Khan and A.Shafiq batted sensibly adding 64 for the 7th wicket before Shafiq was out for 34. In the final 7 overs, Conference added a further 46 runs finishing on 187 for 9 wickets with Khan remaining unbeaten on 39. For Olton, the pick of the bowlers was K.Crotty who took 3 wickets and only conceded 16 runs in his 8 overs. The remaining wickets were shared between Z.Joseph (3), J.Hawkins (2) and B.Brookes (1).

In reply, Olton made a disastrous start losing a wicket off the first ball of the innings. Wickets fell at regular intervals with the Olton batsmen having little answer to the accurate opening spell from M.Khan (3 for 11) and L.Chisti (2 or 14). In the gathering gloom, Olton were finally bowled out for 126, Z.Joseph having scored a patient 50 runs and J.Hawkins an enterprising 25 towards the end. For Conference, the other wickets were taken by K.Dilwar (2) and A.Azam, A.Chisti and D.McGinley (1 each).

After the match, players, officials and spectators enjoyed excellent hospitality and commemorative plaques were presented to each side.
