Match Report

In a match arranged to celebrate the 125thanniversary of the Birmingham League, Conference faced strong opposition on a glorious day at Gorway.

Batting first the Birmingham League threatened to run up a massive score after reaching 100 for 2 wickets off 16 overs thanks to A Phillips (59), J Levitt (23) and Kadeer Ali (34). But the introduction of the spinners caused the League all sorts of problems and Kuldip Diwar with four for 33 and Atiq Chishti with four for 45  well supported by  S Khalid 0 for 25 in ten overs ensured that the League were dismissed for228 in their 50 overs.

In response Conference struggled early on against the pace of S Wedge, four for 44, and at 107 for six looked to be heading for a heavy defeat. But man of the match Atiq Chishti , whose 81 included ten 4s and a six, had other ideas and together with Khalid (47 not out) put on 94 in 62 minutes for the 7thwicket. The late loss of two more wickets led to a tense finish but victory was achieved by 2 wickets with an over to spare. A very sporting game played in the right spirit. Our thanks to Walsall CC for the excellent pitch and catering and to the Birmingham League for hosting the game.
