Match Report

After experiencing a weekend of virtually no games played in the West Midlands area because of constant rain, it was a welcome relief to turn up to the ground to find the match could be played. Stourbridge CC are to be congratulated for all of their efforts in ensuring a prompt start was made.

Conference won the toss and elected to bat. Spectators were then treated to an excellent display of batting and a stand of 190 was constructed between H.Quami (87) and L.Thomason (94). They both hit some glorious shots; Thomason in particular scored some very attractive runs mainly through the off side. He is certainly a player with promise. The young inexperienced bowlers tried very hard to stem the scoring rate but on a pitch, that despite the weather conditions did nothing untoward, allowed a steady stream of boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving. When both of these batsmen departed, there was a slow down in the scoring and Conference started to drop behind the expected scoring rate. However towards the end of the innings, J.Jakeman and B.Ridgway hit some quick runs to finish the 50 overs with a par score.

In what turned out to be a similar start to the first innings, the Worcestershire openers after an unsteady first few overs, managed to settle down and put together a stand of 87. J. Harris and F.Wynn both displayed good shot selection and were excellent running between the wickets.

Conference bowlers were guilty of not bowling consistent lines and again the scoreboard ticked over at the required rate to set the game up for a good finish. An excellent half-century from A. Milton moved the game forward very quickly. He is another young player who displayed some superb shots particularly ‘in/out shots to the offside. When he was out, R.Jaswal took over and again quick running between the wickets and several boundary shots, brought the game to an exciting climax. The Under 19’s hit the winning runs off the last but one ball of the match. J.Jakeman was the pick of the Conference bowlers as he took wickets at vital times and added some control when the run rate was starting to accelerate.

This game was an excellent advert for young players in the Midlands area who not only played the match in the right spirit but also displayed levels of maturity in how they approached each phase of the game situation.

Stourbridge CC hosting of the game was excellent and spectators were privileged to see a well-fought and splendid game of cricket.
