Match Report

After winning the toss the visitors chose to bat first on an excellent pitch at Walsall. An early dropped chance of a caught and bowled was taken full of advantage of by the MCC openers and slipshod fielding and wayward bowling ensured that Lambert and Grace were able to pile on the runs. Lambert, a South African with ten first class hundreds to his name, was particularly aggressive and his 164 included  fourteen 4s and six 6s. Grace with 71 followed by Cox (51 not out) enabled the MCC to score an impressive 327 for two wickets in their 50 overs helped by an extraordinary 31 wides.

Conference openers Andy Lloyd and Mo Ishtiaq set about the run chase with relish and restored some of Conference’s battered reputation with an opening stand of 130 in 21 overs before Lloyd was out for 54. Ishtiaq continued the onslaught on the visitors bowlers before falling for a superb 90 which included ten 4s and a six.. Cameron Fox with 57 tried to keep the momentum going but later batsmen struggled against some accurate spin bowling and eventually Conference fell short of the target by 46 runs having scored 281 for 7. A brave effort but it could have been so much closer without the wides.

Many thanks to Walsall Cricket Club for the excellent arrangements

Thus ended a mixed season of results with three victories, five defeats and one match abandoned.
