Match Report

A strong Cambridge University team batted first and were soon amongst the runs against a young  Conference opening attack. On a flat pitch in warm weather the bowlers struggled to contain the openers Abbot (54) and Hughes who scored 135 off just 116 balls. After the dismissal of Hughes the bowlers regained some control and only Hearne with 59 proved a problem. Some excellent catches  helped Robert Evans take four for 58 and with Arshian Shafiq hitting middle stump three times in his three for 45 together with Kuldip Diwar’s two for 54, the home side were restricted to 325 for nine wickets in their 50 overs.

A big total to chase, but Mohammad Istiaq soon made it look very gettable with an outstanding  53 off 26 balls and, after his dismissal,  the chase was  continued by Attiq Chishti (53) and skipper Laeq Chishti (73). On an increasingly difficult pitch, slowly but surely the spinners for the University began to increase  the run rate required with very accurate bowling  although Shafiq with 29 off  33 balls continued to keep Conference in the hunt. However wickets fell at regular intervals until with three overs left Conference were bowled out for 288 to lose by 37 runs. A valiant effort which made for a most enjoyable game.
