Match Report

A most remarkable match which saw Conference snatch an unexpected win.  At the wonderful Banbury Ground, with its beautiful pavilion and superb huge outfield, MCC batted first. A steady start was made with the opening pair putting on 33 before Eyles fell to J Bulpitt. Shortly after this skipper Chisti introduced Diwar, the first of four slow left arm orthodox spinners to the attack, followed almost immediately by Azam. These two bowlers slowly strangled the run scoring, bowling twenty overs between them for just 61 runs. Bulpitt and Vernon carried on the SLA attack and MCC were struggling at 145 for 6 but Gange (51) and Horsley (29) batted very well and added an unbeaten 86 for MCC to end on 231.

Conference could not get off to such a good start with Brazier and Raza both out for 10. Jones steadied the innings batting patiently first with Flowers (28) then Vernon (32) who fell to Jarvis the fifth SLA spinner of the day. Jones innings ended caught of Cox, an orthdox off spinner for 62 and skipper Leaq Chisti came to the crease with the score at 155 and still much to do with the run rate approaching seven an over.

It was in the 43 rd over that Cox unfortunately injured his hand in the middle of  it and before his skipper Eyles could withdraw him from the attack, Conference scored 24 runs off the over which turned the game leaving Conference to score 36 from 6 overs.

Chisti first with Watts and then Azam narrowed the gap so that 13 were needed off the last two overs. Scoring 10 off the penultimate over left Conference to needing three to win which they duly did with 2 balls to spare.

It was a good game of cat and mouse cricket with skippers using their attacks cleverly, setting challenging field places and never really allowing the batsmen to dominate the ball. Those batters who made runs had batted really well.

Thanks are extended to the excellent hospitality of Banbury CC.
