Match Report

This match was to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Wednesbury CC. President John Whistance welcomed everyone to the club prior to the start of the match. Conference won the toss and batted first. Nightingal and Brazier made a fine opening start of 132. Brazier retired on 51 and Nightingale (Oldswinford) went on to make 92 before he was bowled by Thompson. Flowers and Burroughs both made half centuries and also retired. Vincent tied down the later order batsmen but Conference closed their innings on 324. J Hussain was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 62.

Wednesbury CC had taken the opportunity to reward loyal and long serving players with the chance to play. Club captain Baker opened the batting and made 68 but thereafter only V Whistance and Patel made any significant runs. Conference dismissed the anniversary team for 180 with Butt and Chisti each taking 3 wickets.

But as John Whistance said in his speech after the end of the game, the result of the game was less important than providing club members the chance to celebrate many  good years of cricket at the club,  and he recalled several notable achievements and events by players and teams over the years.

Bill Tansell, Chairman of MCCC, thanked Wednesbury for their hospitality and the magnificent buffet they had laid on and presented the club with an MCCC plaque to honour the occasion.
