MCCC at Bromsgrove 2016 v CCC

Match Report

A first visit to Bromsgrove's superb facilities saw MCCC bat first and begin steadily but at 66-4 looked to be in trouble. A three quarter of an hour break for rain then saw Attiq Chisti and Shafiq Khalid add 189 for the fifth wicket. Khalid made 75 from 64 balls (11 fours and 1 six) whilst Attiq made a superb 144 not out from 140 balls, an innings which showed the value of taking time to settle in before unleashing a range of powerful shots with 20 fours and a six. MCCC's innings closed after 50 overs on 279-6.

The view at the break was that this was a total which was achieveable with good batting.

MCCC struck early with captain to captain dismissal as Laeq Chisti bowled CCC's captain Southgate for 7 and shortly after Ross-Watt took the second wicket of Kerr for 10 with the score at 43.Then followed a stand of 80 between Phillippe and Yadav who was dismissed by Quami for 46.

CCC score was always ahead of the MCCC score at the same number of overs but always behind the run rate yet within striking distance. MCCC struck twice in the next 50 runs to make the score 172-5, Harris taking both wickets including that of Phillippe who had looked untroubled for 80 before he was caught by home star Levett making an uncharacteristic shot. And perhaps MCCC thought they were in with a chance.

This brought Rizvi and Wharton together who then controlled the innings to the end making an unbeaten 110 for the 6th wicket. Wharton's big hitting 60 came off 42 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes ably supported by Rizvis 40 off 47 balls. CCC won with two balls to spare in a close and exciting game.

Many thanks to our umpires David Gower and Geoff Blackmore, to scorers Tony Gibbs and Phil Williams but most of all to Bromsgrove CC for their excellent hospitality, great pitch and convivial entertainment.
